I forgot to ask opinions of medicating?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Sorry I seem so ditsy. We just had our meeting last night and found out the diagnosis less then 24 hours ago.

Am I wrong for even considering medicating my son?

Thanks Again

What is it about medication that scares you? I think you’ll get a balanced opinion here, but people can get pretty emotional about this issue and you’ll hear horror stories from some. Talk to the experts about your fears and concerns, and ask them to lead you toward some of the research based info. that it available. Sure, it might take a long time to find the right med. and/dosage, and it doesn’t work for every child— but you won’t know how it works for yours until you try. Remember, you’ve tried different strategies and still need help, and you’ve had him tested thoroughly— it’s not like you are jumping to medicate with your eyes shut. You need time to get used to this, and hopefully you’re already starting to feel more positive about things. If you feel you’ve suffered most of your life from undiagnosed adhd/ld or whatever, you might take comfort in the fact that you can save your son from years of similar frustration.

Some would say yes, some would say no. It’s an issue around which there is great strength of opinion.

I found it very beneficial to one of my own children even though I had the same doubts as do you.
