I was at our High School football game last week, when I overheard some students talking about my son. I didn’t realize that I was holding my breath until I felt faint.
They were discussing how tall he was, that he liked wrestling, was good at origami, how funny he was, that he enjoys woodworking, and wants to become an electrician, etc.,
No one said that he wasn’t reading on grade level. Or that he struggles in school. Or that he doesn’t try. That he is lazy, immature, unmotivated, and all the other things I have heard in the past.
It was very interesting that my reality of working with my son and his peers reality are two different things. So, I talked to my dad about this. He told me that I see the building blocks that make him who he is. They are seeing the product.
Don’t give up on the blocks, but please see your child for their whole being, my eyes were closed to this one. :o
I get those Ah ah moments too as a parent
That is a great story!!
My daughter has gifts that I appreciate….she does some amazing things day in and day out.. Just last night she had made me a note pillow and tucked in a note that said…I love you…She does stuff like that all the time… She is a great friend, very creative, and a great athlete. She has dreams of going to college and getting a scholarship based on her athletic skills. She has really been coming into her own since high school started things aren’t easy but being a good swimmer has really been an equalizer in her life.
Thank you!
We need to focus so much on the trees that it is indeed easy to miss the forest.
With your permission, I’d like to share this story with some friends and on another parenting board…
