IEP Re-eval LONG SORRY

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Help it is time for my twin 11 yr boys who are in the 5th grade, re-eval ( 3 yrs since last). Question: We are in Illinois to start, the process started Sept 18 2000 for us to sign the papers for the first eval. Dec 20 2000 results from eval and placement with LD services starting on Jan 7 2001. I asked at the March 2003 IEP planning time when they will start this re-eval process for the 2003-2004 year? They told us that they can wait to start the whole thing till Dec 20 2003, 3 yrs from finish and placement not start eval time. Is this true??? I forgot to say we waited or were told to wait from Feb 2000 till Sept 2000 to sign papers because they wouldn’t get to them due to busy). I was uninformed and didn’t know I had a choice or that 60 days was 60 school days to complete the first eval. I would like to be better informed this time!!! I also know that 60 school days from the Dec. 2003 time will put us very late in the year to plan for the next year. We will also go from grade school to the middle school setting next year so we really need info sooner than later for planning this switch as well thanks for the info. Jane

Yes, three years from initial placement or last re-eval until new re-eval. Technically, a re-eval could be completed in a week…I’m sure many have been in a crunch! But If the placement was Dec. 20, 2000, then they should have the re-evaluation completed and hold a meeting by Dec, 20, 2003. But a meeting should be held sometime in the fall to discuss what, if any, evaluations should be completed and you will sign a permission to test form.

This is a good question. When we went threw our three year re-eval it wasn’t done for six months after it was suppose too. I was given the impression by the psychologists that only initial have to be done within 60 days. Reevals get pushed in whenever they are convenient. My sons wasn’t done until the summer.
