I recently went to an outside psychologist to get more in depth info on my child. The psychologist said my IEP wasn’t good enough as it did not tell what my child already knew and was to broad as to what she was to accomplish. She found out that my daughter did not have the automaticity for writing letters and that she remembers best using one modality at a time and hers is verbal to verbal (suprising since she has a language disability,CAP) but is true as I can see it when doing school work.My child is 1.3 in reading and is in 3rd grade. What was written in IEP was that child was to be reading at 3rd grade level and at that time I looked at teacher as your nuts but guessed this must be goal.
The IEP was set up at end of 2nd grade with the support teacher for that time as they don’t select the support teacher until school starts. Also at that time I asked about progess test to see how child is doing and was told couldn’t do that as child would remember answers and teachers would not be able to get an accurate result when they would normally test. So my progress reports are just the report cards that you get three times a year, which don’t tell me squat of how she is reading. On the IEP I get” working on “as goals are set to high.Otherwise I get your child is doing fine and not much more input. My question is: what do others put in the IEP to get progress reports on child, and how do you get them to be more specific so the next year teacher will know where to start, and will I really be able to get them to go back to basics to teach my child automaticity of letters and numbers while it seems they keep plugging on since she kind of gets it?
Here is from my 3rd grade sons IEP regarding reading:
Child will improve his reading skills to a 2.5 level (currently at the primer level)
A. Child will be able to answer comprehension questions after reading a story at a 2.5 level.
B. Child will be able to give 2 definitions for multiple meaning words.
C. Child will fluently read a 2.5 selection with expression.
These goals were set in Sept of 01. We received his progress report the other day it stated he is at the 50 percent level for goal A. Comleted goal B, and is at the 50 percent level for goal C. So wonder if this means he can read the 2.5 grade level with 50 percent accuracy or he is half way to the goal reading somewhere on the 1st grade level? I have a meeting next week to find out but just thought this was interesting. He has been moved to a 1 on 1 reading group. I will get the details next week as to which program it is ect.
His 1 on 1 is to work on phonics because they say his skills in this area are substatially behind which shows in his writing also.
