I'm new to all of this and need some help for services

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I just found out that my 11 year old son has three learning disabilities. One is a just a learning disability, the other is a phonological disability, and the other is a learning and reading disability along with anger management. I just found out right before Christmas break that he’s still reading on a first grade level, gets told he’s a slow reader. The school says that they can’t put him in anymore services without putting him in with the mental and physcially handicapped children and that won’t help him. I’ve been advised to get help outside the school but don’t know the first place to look. I live in the (Little Rock) Arkansas area. Any help with any information would be great and helpful.

Thanks so much for your time.

Sincerely,
Reuah

Your school is trying to scare you out of requesting the services that your son needs and deserves.

http://www.yellowpagesforkids.com/help/ar.htm - scroll down and you will find a list of resources. You have a Disability Rights Center in Little Rock as well as a Learning Disabilities Association. These places can help you with the educational laws for your state, looking for an advocate, etc.

first of all go to google, put in CAPD, just like that all capitals….. check out first 7 websites, see what problem areas your son falls into, then go to that site!!! get as much info. as you can, take notes of EVERYTHING that describes your son’s learning disability. go to your sons child study team, DEMAND he be tested!!! if they just caught his reading problem now, where have they been?? how have they let him go this far then tell you now???? BULLSHIT….. this is negligence on the part of the school!!! my son has been in I.E.P. since first grade…. audio processing, always a grade behind, phonics, what a battle, every year his i.e.p. would be the same…. it’s very frustrating as a parent, can you imagine how it is for the kids??? anyway, my son who is 13, still has problems with phonics, math, study skills…. i talked to somebody who told me about CAPD, and i was floored…. i read up on everything including the tests that CAN be given, and i went into that school fully armed with info. and ready to open a can of whoop ass!!! i TOLD THEM what I want…. first audiologist test, to see how he is processing, and a pathologist test to see what he is producing, also a LED test!! read the site…… they’re giving my son these tests and then will modify, and teach accordingly!! these kids have to be taught with different tools how to learn how to get around their learning problems so they can catch up to where they should be!!! don’t let them just push your son thru each grade, they tried that crap with me, TOTALLY BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE!!! you have to keep fighting for your son, and anger management, hmmmmm, could it be he’s so frustrated??? i’ve been fighting for a long time, but now that i’ve found that website, whoa, i’ve got everybody by the short hairs, and YOU don’t have to pay for the testing either, the school does….. school gives you crap, go to the state board of education…. tell them, it’s a long struggle, but worth it, these kids have to go out into the world on their own someday, and it’s hard enough without having trouble learning!!!!!!
