Kansa Learning Strategies????

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 10 year old severely dysgraphic child has a new spec-ed teacher this year. We just found out at the school’s open house last night. As we chatted, the teacher mentioned she had not read son’s IEP, test results, or file yet but had scheduled him with other students and would be using the Kansa Learning Strategies System this year. I have never heard of this system, couldn’t find anything on it on the web, and am very concerned about scheduling and determining a system without the benefit of knowing the specifics on a child. BUT, I am trying to keep an open mind. She agreed to call me after she reviews his file next week and we could discuss this further.

In the interim, has anyone had experience with this system or know how I could learn more about it?

Thanks for your help,

I’m thinking that she is talking about the Strategies Intervention Model developed by the University of Kansas. They have a number of programs to deal with different areas of need. One program is called PENS to help with writing. I used PIRATES a test taking strategy. I like the programs a lot and they require teachers to be well trained and provide the program according to strict guidelines. Its been quite a few years since my training, but you might try to locate information under Strategies Intervention Model and look for terms like PENS, PIRATES.

Angela,

Thank you so much for the link! I’ll double check and see if this is it!

The Strategies Intervention Model is a *really* good one. (Sigh, BIG HOWEVER, school systems so often find ways to screw up even good things.)
You might want to also look at http://www.contentenhancement.org too, and the articles about “watering up”the curriculum on this site.

Thank you, Sue, for the web site! I’ll check it out.

I am so excited by the possiblity of this! Last year was our first year with special ed for David and it went…okay. David loved the teacher and she helped somewhat but I’m not sure his underlying problems were addressed. The new teacher is just out of school (which scared me at first) and just full of enthusiam and new ideas!
