LD in King County, WA

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Our family is considering relocating to King County, WA from northern Illinois. Our 11 year old son is bipolar/ADHD/OCD with severe learning disabilities. We need to know which school districts in the Federal Way/Kent/Renton and surrounding area might be equipped to meet his needs, or be willing (without al lot of balking) to place him in a private LD school. We know of at least one such private school in the Renton. We’ve had some bad experiences in the past, but Pete is now thriving in a terrific specialized LD school. The class sizes are small and the environment is highly structured, quiet and calm. Can anyone help?

possibly call each of those sch systems if you don’t get much response here and find out what they have to offer.

Loves, good luck and good luck w/ the move.

I live in Redmond, a little north of the area you’re considering.

I don’t know anything about the school districts down there, but I can say that the services available in the Seattle area are HORRRIBLE. I don’t know why, but they are. There are a few good clinics, etc. but they’re all booked for a long time in advance. We’re in the Lake Washington School District, and its bad, the ones around are bad (except for Bellevue), so watch out! The impact of this is more on a kid approaching Jr. High, which yours is, so I’d be extra careful.

If your child is doing well, you really may want to reconsider moving. There are a lot more horror stories than good ones out there!

We have had great success with our son, who has Aspergers Syndrome, but its only because of the 40-50K we’ve spent, and the tremendous effort we’ve expended.

Good luck, and if you find that you really have to move out here, and you need info not related to the southern end of King Co., send me e-mail at [email protected].
