Letters to the district: mail vs. fax

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m requesting an updated IEP meeting for my son. The case manager is not at our local school, and I’ve found that mail to the district takes forever as it goes in the seemingly endless loop of interoffice mail.

I’m wondering about faxing it to her, with a phone call first and perhaps a follow-up phone call. Does this protect my legal rights? Or I could hand deliver it if that’s better.

And does anyone know the timeline for such requests in California? Every day this delays is one more day of missed recess and detention for incomplete assignments for this kid.

not sure about time lines in Ca. But a fax is admissable in court as well as email.
But,defintely make sure you call, ask for the name of the person and that you spoke with, and tell them you will be putting their name on it,to ensure they give it to the right person.

Ok sister has higher iq dyslexic son and after a year of asking they finally did an MFE. She heard from her son that supposedly the MFE mtg was tomorrow. She called and they said yes. She can’t make it and told them so. The sp. ed. director told her it was important that she be there.

Isn’t she supposed to get a formal written notice in advance?

I believe an MFE is the equivalent in my state to a CST. This is a eligibility meeting,or illegibility meeting. Yes they should of sent a formal invite, your sister has the right to request that this meeting be rescheduled. Tell her to simply ask for a copy of her procedural safeguards, and an explanation of why she was not informed prior to the night before about a meeting of this importance/
