Lindamood-Bell

My 4th grade son has NVLD, ADD, and Central Auditory Processing Disorder. His SPED teachers use aspects of Lindamood-Bell when working with him, and the program’s been mentioned to us many times through the years. We have a LMB facility about five miles away, so I took him there for an eval. They recommend a 10-week intensive program called Visualizing and Verbalizing, based on his scores. It’s expensive and will require taking him out of school (and applying for home-schooling). Of course there are no guarantees that it will work. Before I take such a big step, I’m wondering if there are other parents who have tried Lindamood-Bell, and whether their experiences have been successful? Thanks, Kathleen

I suggest that if you don’t get a response again, ask the LB center for references, ie, parents of children who have gone through the program. Probably talking to 5-6 parents of graduates would give you a better idea of what to expect. The LB provider will have to contact the parents first for permission to give you their phone #’s, but you are considering paying a lot of money, so…it seems like a reasonable thing to provide to you.
The private school for learning disabled children in north suburban Chicago uses this method for teaching reading, and another method if Lindamood-Bell is not effective (according to the school’s web site.)
Another suggestion is to look up the method in Google Scholar. There are about 160 citations.
I was holding the LB method in reserve if the Davis Dyslexia method did not work for my dtr. Fortunately, she is getting good results and tools in dealing with her dyslexia with Davis.
I talked to 8 sets of parents whose kids had gone through Davis before I signed the check.

Hi Kathleen,

Where I would ask who did the evaluations?
As each of these can be confused with the others.

What are your sons practical difficulties, beyond the labels? As the labels are very general terms.
Where you need a program that recognises and addresses his specific difficulties.

Thanks for your message. He was diagnosed by a neuro-psychologist (except for CAPD, which an audiologist diagnosed) who acknowledged lots of over-lap. We have tried lots of stuff for him over the years, and right now are focused on Lindamood Bell because we want to make schoolwork a little easier for him if at all possible. Of course there are lots of other therapies still to try….seems there are new things every day sometimes….but it’s hard to focus on more than one at a time.
