math help that keeps their attention

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

If your student struggles with memorizing times tables and addition facts, they likely need a new approach. Some students can drill and drill but the facts just don’t stick. When the numbers are associated with a visual image and story, the student can finally have something in their mind to “hang on to and “tag” the fact for retrieval. To teach 6 x 6, for instance, try showing the picture of the sixes crossing the desert with their tongues hanging out and drooping shoulders, heavy from the heat, tell the student to remember they are “thirsty sixes” and they will recall the answer 36!!
