We are really testing out the meds. My son 10, 87 lbs has been on Paxil for 10 months. We have been on Adderal XR (disaster) currently metadate CD still problems. The psych has suggested starting Concerta this weekend. He seems to be having major rebound problems and is getting very “stuck” to the point there is really no way to get him out of his anger. It has happened at school in the early afternoon 2x. Both when he was asked to stop doing something. At home it is happening at night. When it is over he is very apologetic! We are trying to figure out if the stimulants are increasing the problem and I was considering asking the doctor for Strattera but I have read several posts that Straterra does not help impulsiveness which is one of our biggest problems. He does not have major attention or hyperactivity issues it is more impulse and control issues. FYI: the reason we have been on the current meds is that he was refusing to swallow pill, he is so upset about the last week he said he will do whatever he needs to do!
One thing to consider is this: impulsivity is when a person has trouble inhibiting an inappropriate action or response. A lack of control over your emotions is just another way of exhibiting impulsivity. Anxiety can also affect emotional control and stimulants can increase anxiety in susceptible children. How is he off of stimulants altogether but still on anxiolytics?
