I am curious if any other parents have had this experience. Ritalin/concerta products put my ADHD son 10 years old into hyper drive more so than with no meds at all. Adderall reg and XR seem to help but never with consitent results. Now they have added GAD to his diagnosis. Could the adderall have added anxiety because now they have added 10 mg buspar 3 times a day to help with anxiety, along with the 20 mg adderall XR. They say anxiety is the biggest issue with my son but he definitely has ADHD symptoms present. I am confused with this diagnosis.
GAD is my son’s primary dx. He would respond to his anxiety in a hyper/impulsive/ angry way.
An example: His unrealistic anxiety is that he will miss the bus to day care and be left with no where to go. He “handles” this by callin gout ht elast ten minutes of class; forgetting items for homework, not paying attention to assignmnets, fidgeting in desk, pushing and bullying down the hall etc. We handled this like ADD. When the pdoc realized that anxiety drove his behavior, the teacher seated him where he could see the day care bus and knew it wouldn’t leave! That and the zoloft he took have helped.
It was after the anxiety was tempered that we truly saw some ADD and treated with only 18 mg concerta.
It was very eye opening for me view my sons behavior profile in terms of unexplainable anxiety. His therapist also works with him on these things. Hope this helps.
