Hi,
I’m new to this board so i’ll give a brief history. Where to begin Starting around 2nd grade my son showed signs of poor visual reasoning and very poor hand writing. Didn’t quite seem comfortalbe in his own shoes. Just alittle off. Third grade got worse, always talking to teachers because he couldn’t organize his day, remember homework, couldn’t understand how to take notes. Forth grade was a great teacher. Finally someone to listen. there was something going on. We got him across the board testing. He starting receiving OT, 1x a week (they made us feel greatfull). John did great that year. He was the most improved student in the fourth grade. Then comes fifth grade what a night mare. He had a new OT provider. She saw that there was more going on with my son. His teacher was evil would take any suggestions me or his 4th grade teacher gave, she wouldn’t even listen to the Ot. So after talking it over with his dr and crying over the up hill battle we got our son an advocate and outside testing. As it turns out he has a non verbal LD. He has a 23 point difference in his verbal and non verbal language. So being a good mom i wanted to be educated about my child so i could understand him more. After all my research and many books i got it i think. Unfortunately the districk i live in is really messed up. Everything is an up hill battle. If you don’t have an advocate they treat you like your a crazy parent who wants the world. The advocate i have has her own business and is only at the agency 2 days a week. I’ve been waiting for 2 1/2 weeks for her to return my call. School is becoming a nightmare again. His special ed teacher he is in regular classes but the special ed teacher is the “helper” for all the teachers is becoming rather difficult to work with. She was at his comittee meeting before he moved up to the middle so she could understand his learning difference. Now i have to explain it to her again and keep reminding her everything is in his IEP. I’m climbing up hill again. So if anyone knows the names of some advocates in the Buffalo New York area please let me know.
Thank you all in advance,
Julie

PTI is a Federally funded program which trains parents in Fed and state laws and regs. The advocates are parents of special needs chiuldren, and will both train you as well as advocate for you at no cost. Some chapters are very good, some not so very good; whether your local is good or not will have to be determined by you.
Good luck to you!

I live near the Buffalo area and think I can help. I have worked with both a wonderful attorney and advocate.

If you click on “LD Resources” in the banner at the top of this website, and then click on “State by State Guides”, and then click on your state, you should find a list of organizations. By calling around to these organizations, you should be able to find some sources for advocates.
