my adhd/ld son acts very immature... is this normal?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi my son is going to be 8 in November. He has twin brothers that are going to be 4 next week. My question is, is it common for children with ADHD and LD to act very immature? He still screams like a 2 year old when he’s playing…and is constantly being rough/wrestling with his brothers. Sometimes I think of him as the younger brother. When he’s around older children the behavior isn’t as bad but any time he’s around younger children it’s as if he thinks he’s 3 again. I would love to hear from other parents who may have experienced some similar behavior and i’m open to any advice you may have. many thanks!!!!

Yes, it is completely normal for kids with LD or ADHD to act more immature than their more typical peers. You might want to borrow the video “Last one picked, first one picked on” by Rick Lavoie. It deals with some of the social issues of kids with LD and ADHD. His book “It’s so much work to be your friend” is also worth a read.

I am glad that I read this because I am having the same problems. My son just turned 11 years old and he acts more like 5. I have a younger son who is 9 and for the most part they dont play well together because my younger one is so mature and he tells my older one that he acts like a baby all the time. I do see that it is a normal thing, but the hardest part is to try to change it. I am lost in the whole matter myself. But after reading yours I know I am not alone….
