hello all,
im new to this list. i am really confused and i hope someone can help me with my issues. let me give some history. i have a 9 year old son in 2nd grade. He was does have Learning Disability. well, i have a iep in place for him at school. Recently, this year my son is doing good to a point but i really do not think the teacher understand his disability. i got his progress report today and she is placed a low c grade in reading and fine arts which includes writing. she is commented that his handwriting skills are very poor. my question is this is part of disability? what can i do to help. i already practice daily with him on reading and writing at home. He gets only eight hours a month of speech and OT at school. i really think he needs more therapy time. He also gets cmc with is resource one hour daily. According, to my son he only goes sometimes to resource because the teacher forgets to send him. i really think that is a violation of his iep since it is listed on iep he needs one to one daily for a hour. i complained before to the teacher that he really does need his one to one insturction. i just feel she does not understand. i have not seen no modification in homework. my son gets very frustrated doing his work. He is doing 18 different words a week for spelling and vocabulary. plus a book report. i really would think some keyboarding skills could help with work if allowed. please give me some suggestions on helping my son.

thank you

Complain in writing to the principal, district head of special education, and/or supernitendent abnout him missing the one-to-one. That is just negligent.
Although if he is scheduled for it and misses, why doesn’t the person who is supposed to be helping him come and fetch him, or at least ask for an explanation?

I can send you my notes on teaching handwriting. Also if you want them my extensive posts on teaching reading. If interested, just write and tell me what you want, [email protected]

Hi! I’m new to this website myself, I hope this may help you. When my son started Kindergarden we had trouble with teachers and other students. My son hated going to school. I was always getting phone calls telling me what my son had done wrong that day. I finally got fed up with the school and I got in their face. I was there at least 2 days a week investigating the problem. It wasn’t until I got angry and demanded action from the school that things got better. Even my sons resource teacher, I got in her face as well as his teacher and the principal. I demanded more time in the resource room. It took about a month and a half to get them all on the same page, but it worked. My sons school performance and grades improved and he didn’t fight me to go to school as much. At any major book store there is a book that tells you your leagal rights and who to contact regauding your IEP. The school should enforce it, and you have the right to contact your agency and demand a retest and to provide the sevicies your child needs. By law they have to. I hope this helps, I just know from experience you have to speak up or the school will let your child slip through the cracks. Nichole

I think your own suggestions are good ones. Are modifications to his homework mandated in his IEP?

and if don’t work outside the home, don’t be afraid to go into school and remind your son yourself when it’s time to go to resource. His teacher should remember but it’s hard to remember that one thing when they have so many other things.

good luck.
