Need advice: 5-year old (possible ADHD)

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son, 5 years old, started kindergarden this year (young 5, bday in July). He has had behavior issues & problems adjusting. He is fine academically but that is now being hurt by his behavior.

He is a great kid; intelligant and active. But he seems to have problems listening to anyone. We experience problems with him at home but not as severe as he seems to be behaving in school.

He continues to have problems adjusting & we have had to pick him up several days due to his behavior now. We had a huge meeting w/ the school & the teacher was to implement some changes. I dont believe the teacher has implamented the plans. The schools only suggestion is to pull him out & start again next year. I personally due not think this is gonna make any difference & in the end my be worse for him. Can they force me to pull him out?

His doctor had mentioned ADHD but wants to just put him on meds w/ no testing and see if that helps. Im sorry but I dont work that way. With all of the worries out @ this type of meds why would anyone just say here start this, we’ll see what it does. So now we are even looking for a new doctor.

Our family has been through alot this year & it doesnt seem to be getting better. I have no experience in this and don’t know what to do. Does anyone have any advice on where I should start?

I would suggest counseling and testing before trying meds. It would be a good idea to get a thorough picture before making any decisions.
