New Here & I've had it with my nine year old his just AH

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

From the time he gets up he is defiant and he does nothing in school. We have taken everything away. They keep changing his meds it’s driving me up the walk. I’m trying to finish college and he’s starting to rub off on his four year old sister. HELP

Obviously, changing medications has not solved the problem. I don’t know exactly what problems you are working with, but it sounds like he is extremely unmotivated. I get the idea that you are using a lot of privilege removal and it is not working, either. It sounds like you need a new plan where he experiences more positives for doing well. It is also possible that the school situation is not appropriate to his special needs, and you may want to look into an alternative placement. In my experience with my own and many other children, environmental change can make a phenomenal difference. We continue to try to pound square pegs into round holes, but finding some square holes works a lot better. Without knowing more about your situation, I can’t say much more, but I would take charge of the medication situation and go back to what seemed like the best medication to you, or stop altoghether and see where he is and start over again from scratch. Sometimes the medications themselves can create as many problems as they solve, and more medications can be added to deal with the side effects of the current medications, or constant dosage changes never allow for the child to settle in to a particular state and see how it works. In any case, it is clear that the current approach is not working, and at a certain point, it is wise to just admit that the advice you are getting is bad and you need to talk to someone with more tools in their tool chest than changing medications and dosages. Maybe a behavior management expert who believes in positive reinforcement combined with a new school environment might combine to give you some better results.

Sounds like you are incredibly frustrated! Hang in there and don’t give up - you will find something eventually. But don’t keep banging your head against the wall - start looking for some doors!
