My son (10) started his medication just over 2 weeks ago. It is a very low dose of ritalin (5mgs/2x a day). The doctor wanted to see how he reacted to that amount for a few weeks, then he was going to start moving his level up until they found what is going to work best.
Here is my concern - for the first two days, ds felt nausea, but that subsided on day 3. Now, though, he has gone down to eating VERY little food. He is already quite slim and I am giving him the meds after breakfast and lunch, but it seems to be affecting his appetite all day long. Is this normal? Are there any tricks or types of food that I could possibly try to help encourage his eating? I won’t be seeing the doctor for almost 2 more weeks, and I’m just not sure how to deal with this.
I would appreciate any input. Also, as a side note - the low dosage has done NOTHING to the ADHD tendencies, and teacher at school has not noticed any changes, so I know a higher dose will be required.
Thanks again for any suggestions/tips/help.
Be well,
Jori
Thank you
Concerta is the med of choice for the dr from Sick Kids for my ds, but for a number of reasons, they are going to be slowly working him up to the levels. I guess it will just take some time.
I’m glad to hear that your daughter did get her appetite back after some time. He will eat some days, but then just be “not hungry” on other days.
I appreciate your advice and input.
Thanks again!

That is a very low dosage. I would continue to do what you are doing, also provide his favorite snacks, maybe try some protein drinks or shakes. My 19 year old sone complained when he first took Adderall that he wasn’t hungry but he forced himself to eat anyways…
My daughter is on 54 mg of concerta and she now eats like a horse…At first she wasn’t as hungry but now it isn’t a problem.
