New york State REgents Testing Accomodations and ADD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 9th grader with ADD is taking the NY State Regents in Earth Science in a few weeks. We were just informed that there is a Science Lab Practical exam being given on Tuesday of next week. Since he gets extra time on any testing they told me his practical will be given AFTER SCHOOL HOURS to provide him the extra time he needs to do the test. I am wondering if this is not just a LITTLE bit discrimanatory and if any one has any thoughts. RZ

It doesn’t sound that way to me. When I was taking Regents (granted this was a number of years ago) they were administered on weekends and other non-school days, just like the SAT. If a school day schedule can’t accomodate your child’s need for and entitlement to extra time, what realistic choice is there but after school? Is there a history with this school treating your child poorly or denying him his accomodations? If so, there might be more to your point.

My concern would be that it could be exhausting to be in school all day and then have to stay and take a big test like that. Is there a way to only attend school for half a day and then take the test? Or, maybe only go to school for the exam? Here in our NJ school when we have standardized state tests at the high school level it’s all that the students have to do on that day. They usually have half a day of school which is strictly testing. Also, medication (if that’s even an issue) can be an issue if the levels are low because that’s not usually when he is in school. Also, in our schools students who have testing accommodations will test in a separate room so that time is not an issue and it can be taken at the same time as the other students.
