Non Verbal Learning Disorder

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My nephew has just been diagnosed with a Non Verbal Learning Disorder and I would like to know if anyone out there has had any experience with ths and what are my chances of getting him into a private school as he is in 7th now and has struggled all his school career and it is getting much more pronounced in the higher grades. He is barely making it. He is in summer school now because of two failed subjects. He also has a siezure disorder which is controlled by meds. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it. Thank You

Hi Liz,

There are several of us who frequent this web site who have children with NLD, and several other NLD adults who drop by from time to time.

There have been a number of posts about NLD on the “teaching” BB in the last few days. There are also a number of articles in the library of this web site. Two other very useful sites are:

www.NLDontheweb.org
www.NLDline.com

It is possible to get an out of district placement for an NLD child, but barring a severe emotional problem, it is likely that you will at least have to allow the school district to try to meet his needs first. Are the willing to work with you on developing an appropriate IEP? While it requires a lot of management on our part, so far, our local school system has been able to provide adequate support for our NLD son who is entering 6th grade this fall.

Karen
