Norman Howard School

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone here heard of the Norman Howard School located in Rochester? My nephew is hoping to go there. His parents went to check it out and loved it (its a school for learning disabled kids) My nephew has a medical condition (epilepsy) and his comprehension scores were below normal and he processes things very slowly. He failed two classes last year and had to take them over the summer which he passed. I wonder what his chances are of having district pay for this private school which is no doubt expensive, I am guessing at least $20,000/yr. He had a neuro-psych eval and the doctor recommended that school. Does anyone have knowledge of this school or how difficult it is to have the district pay for a private school. I have heard you need high paying lawyers ect. Is that true? I would appreciate any information. Thanks, Liz

I have heard of Howard School and it has a good reputation; however, I’ve not known anyone attending there. As for the school district dollars: In most districts, you’d get a fight over a $400 expenditure…$20,000 is a WWIII situation. Doesn’t happen often. In fact, rarely.

Hi,
If every other placement was unsuccessful you can have the district pay for this school. The district, by LAW, must meet his needs. I will give you a head start…. contact Roland Smiley in Albany. He is in charge of placement for private schooling in NYS. I have one number for him, I cant remember if this is his home number or not (518) 433-8639.We have a child placed in an out of state school for different needs but the district pays for it all, thanks to Mr. Smiley
Good Luck
