Not Sure

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

3 days into my son taking Adderall XR, he is doing wonderful at daycare as far as no temper tantrums, but now he isn’t eating. Can someone tell me if this is only an adjustment he is going through…and if so when will he get back to eating normal?

I had a student that was soo thin, that I thought she was anorexic. She only started to develop and eat after they stopped the meds. I believe that not eating or sleeping are side effects and with some, they don’t go away. You may have to change meds. Good luck

The meds are appetite suppressants, though I have met overweight kids who are on ADHD meds. This may stop when he gets used to it, or the doasge may need to be lowered. It may be that you are just more conscious of it right now, I don’t know where you live bit it has been close to 100 every day for almost 2 weeks here and my 3 kids haven’t eaten lunch since the heat wave started, and neither have I. Only 1 of my kids has ADHD and he isn’t on his meds right now. Just watch for what continues to happen before you assume someting.

My daughter has a good breakfast but once her pill takes affect, she eats very little throughout the day, but when it has worn off by after school, she makes up for her lost appetite at dinner time and throughout the evening. She also has insomnia and I give her a 1/4 piece of melatonin so that she will fall asleep.

We’re watching Kyle’s eating closely, he’s skinny already. He has a good breakfast and eats well at dinner. I’m not sure how he’s doing at lunch now that he’s at school, but his Dr. said as long as breakfast and dinner were eaten okay, we should be fine. We are still going for weight checks every 2 months just to be sure.
