My son is classified SLD in school last year .His teacher say he is reading on grade level however if you give him a short story to read on his grade level that he has never heard before he reads most of the words wrong.He confuses similar words and skips over lines and small words.Since there are no longer picture he is missing the majority of the story now.He is suppose to have a scribe for his state testing and district testing but what can we do about his reading.He is in resource room for some subjects but not reading but does get modifications.I think if someone sat beside him and made sure he tried to soumd out all the words instead of guessing and tell him if he is wrong because he dont know when he does make a mistake he keeps on reading.He is very bright and his teacher dont seem to know how to work with him since he is intelligent as well as have a disability too.It took three years to get him tested for more than just speech which he needed desperatly and his dr. sent papers to the school on that as soon as he turned 3.The only reason I feel he got the tests last year we told the school he was going to apsychartrist for behavior problems at home and most of it we feel was due to fustrations from school.

1.yes he had a evaluation Feb.2001 hada Woodcock johnson done .
he was already classified for speech since he was 3 1/2.OT evaluation was done this past dec. does get OT services.
2.Yes he has a IEP goes to resource room 90 mins a day for spelling + phonics,and writing.No I dont agree with his reading on grade level and have wrote that and told them it all the time this and they know it but they say he is better off than the rest of the students in the sp. ed class he is in because most of them cant read at all.They say he has all the knowledge and info in his head.The school psy just said to me about a month ago I bet your son is really struggling with his reading this year.They know it but I feel they dont know what to do with him.The results from his testing last year stated his intelligence is higher than 140 but in school setting around 107 and he is challenged.They say a visual perception disability.I can place his scores if anyone wants to offer any insight in this.My son also knows alot of infomation due to us exposing him to lots of reading and other stuff.He is really into science.He has tests next week and I know from his practices he wont due to well.

Well, sounds like what the school will try to get away with if you do not know and enforce your rights. BTW, your son is not “reading on grade level” despite what the teacher says.
#1.) Has he had a complete multifactored evaluation and when?
#2.) Does he have an IEP (Individual Education Plan)? Do you agree with it?
#3.) Sounds like you need to put your paperwork in order to see what you have, get some advice on what you need…which sounds to me like more in depth evaluations by an independent qualified person at public expense. In the meantime, you need to educate yourself about your child’s issues and what’s available to help him, so you can make sure he gets the kind of help he sounds like he needs.
Write back with more info. There are people here who are from Ohio and elsewhere who are knowledgeable and can help with good advice.
