Oral Testing?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m wondering at what point others have requested oral testing for their children? My son brought home a geography test with 44%. I gave him the test again and, without giving him any new information he got an 84. I needed to read the questions (he was reading “continent” as “country”) and then guide him as to where to write the answer. His official label is ADHD, but he is getting help for written language. I suspect reading problems, but this has not been identified as a problem. His teacher does read every question to the class, but without the 1-1 he cannot focus.

I would ask for an IEP meeting (if he already has one) to have this accomodation added. My son does the same thing and he has it written in his IEP that he can dictate or take tests with the resource room teacher or the math specialist (for math tests). It can be very frustrating for the child when they know the work but still fail the test. Eventually, they will stop trying or it could have a negative effect on self esteem. Good Luck.
