parent rights

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have been having difficulty with a school administrator who has given me a lot of incorrect information.( Also unprofessional at times) This person has also made errors on the IEP. There is someone else at our school that is capable of doing what she is doing in regards to communication and IEP etc. (it is a large school) Has anyone else run into this problem? As a parent do we have the right to request that this person not be involved with our childs plan? I am worried that this person will hamper my childs progress next year and interfere with what the resource teacher can do. She already has caused problems since she became involved the last month of school.

You have found a good bulletin board for solid information. The IEP team is a team, if the district chooses someone who does not know what they are doing, it is up to the rest of the team to make up for the deficits. You can also bring along help - remembering the team is designed to come up with a solid plan based on the needs of your child. Not everyone will always agree, but in the spirit of the best for the child, everyone should work toward that objective. There are a number of us (from both sides of the table who have fought for kids a long time and will give you invaluable advice).
Best of luck, Ken

I ran into a similar problem with a school psych. After several incidents of unprofessional conduct and some very unpleasant dealings with her my son’s case was reassigned to another person. It took some documentation on my part, but the bottom line was that she and I were both too angry with each other to function in my son’s best interests.

What documenation did you have and to whom did you talk to? Who from the school made the decsion to withdraw this person from your childs case? Did you have to go to the district level or board level?
