Possibly ADD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m about to head out the door to meet my DH & daughter at the peds office. We’ve decided to have her evaluated for ADD. ADD runs in my family (on both sides) and she has been showing signs.

What type of stigma is there in our society? She’ll be 9 in July and I’m concerned about her self-esteem.

I’ll update you.. Thanks!

I think there is a lot less stigma about ADD now than there used to be. Its a more “accepted” dx.

I’m finding out about more of my adult friends who have it. One friend in particular, has struggled with it her whole life, but did not get diagnosed until she was in her 40’s. She now takes meds for it and is so grateful for those meds because they really help her a lot. She said she would not be able to function without it. She did manage to complete college and grad school, but she said she used to tape record the lectures and it would take listening to them 5 times before she was able to get what they heck was going on. She wishes she had known earlier.

Anyway, talking to adults who have it put things into perspective because you see that they are highly functioning people and it gives you an idea that it’s not the worst thing in the world.

I hope things work out for your daughter.
