I wanted to share this with you guys. Forgive me for being overly dramatic, rather opinionated and at risk of being accused of being an enternal idealistist. For those of you who don’t want my views on civil rights,or find me way too talkative,go ahead and just breeze past this post. All others,it was just Martin Luther King Jr’s. birthday. Talked about this on the chat lastnight, and to me, seemed so fitting to post about it here.
On my way home from work I listened to a radio interview done with Mrs. Brown. For those of you who do not know who she is:
This lady,as a black girl in arkansas, walked into a all white school, flanked by armed guards,to exercise her right NOT to be discriminated against. With this landmark case,Brown vs. the board of education,a little girl learned that it was not okay to be given less of an education, simply because she was different. Interestingly enough her comment was, that she really didn’t know what the big deal was,her classmates were okay with her,and heck, armed guards really make a person feel safe.
God Bless you Mrs. Brown, god bless people like Rosa Parks. A seamstress who said no to a bus full of angry white people. She would not move to the back of the bus, simply because she was black. “I deserve equal rights”,was her stand. THANK YOU. If it wasn’t for the awsome bravery and resolve of these people and many more,we wouldn’t be able to say,”I do not agree with your IEP”.
Kind of changes a persons perspective. We,as parents, know we might have to put up a fuss, just to get our kids a Free and Appropriate Education, but we also know, that noone will beat us,or kill us for standing up for their rights. Hell I might need an antacid after my next IEP,but I will say a little prayer of Thanks to Mrs. Brown,MLK jr.,and Rosa Parks, when I walk out to get my Tums…
A Free and Appropriate Education, we HAVE a long way to go,but we HAVE come a LONG way, thanks you guys:-)
Re: Ramblings by Socks
Thanks Socks. You remind us how much has been gained from those willng to fight the system.
Re: Why just yesterday...
…my sister was able to tell the special ed guy that she was not going to sign the IEP because she did not agree and for that matter, the rest of the team was not in agreement, either. Man, have we come a long way.
Re: lets rock and roll
I will soon be involved with my very 1st IEP meeting, and you are all invited to join in on the fun.
What do you suppose would happen if we all just went as a group to these meetings. You know instead of 5 of them and one of us parents, turn the tables on them and make them feel over powered by parent power!
Re: lets rock and roll
This would be a sight to see! Don’t you feel in someway we are all their anyway? We are there in support and spirit.
Good Luck with your IEP,and you remember,we got your back:-)
Well put!
Andy
