Re-assessment of my 9 year old

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

We recently had our daughter (we live in England)….. she is 9 years old and was diagnosed as dyslexic and dyscalculia. I have written to this bulletin board before… now we have the figures for her recent report. We get help for literacy but none for maths…. the figures seemed very confusing …..
Can anyone help me understand them don’t know if USA special needs are the same???

Under the heading Reading:

Schonell wording reading test R.A. 7.10
Salford sentence reading test R.A. 7.11

Spellling and Writing:
Schonell spelling test: S.A. 7.7

Numeracy they seemed to do no test but wrote the following:-

Using a maths assessment for Year 3/4 she scored 12 out of 23 for computation and 7 out of 15 for use and understanding of maths language.

She kew addition and subtraction facts by hear but seemed to prefer to count objects on a page or her fingers.

She understood signs and processes of addition and subtraction, but although she called the multiplication sign ‘times’ she operated as though it was a plus sign. It went on……. Amy was able to complete number sequences and count up. When asked to count down from 100 she spotted the 100 square on the wall and accurately used that! She recognised seuqnce 2,4,6,8 etc was the times tables. She did not know what twice mant and instead of multiplying added 2. When attempting vertically arranged addition and subtraction Amy explained to me that she was confused about what whether to start with tens or the nits….. Left to make her own choice she worked the sume from tens and units. She did not use any form of carrying of tens in addition, or decomposition in subtraction, instead ignorising carrying figures and always taking the smaller from the larger in subtraction. She could tell me which were 100’s and 10’s in a 3 digit number she does not really understand the base ten number system…. (that tells you a lot!!))))

General: Visual Memory 6 out of 6 items recalled.
Auditory sequential memory: recalled digit seques of 4 forwards and 2 in reverse scoring 4 out of 10.
Receptive Vocabulary using B.P.V.S. scored 70th percentile i.e. above average for her age.
Patten matching and completion test; scored at between 50th and 75th percentil i.e. within her age band (average).
In numeracy Amy will need to revisit and consolidate place value work until it is secure, using concrete material where possible.
Repeated practice to help her to memorize addition and subtraction fcts with games etc will be needed. ….

It does rather go on too long…. but I am sure they are saying that her numeracy needs help - what do you think. We now have to arrange a meeting with the school Special Needs Co-ordinator…. whether we will get help or not is another thing….
