Regaurding My Daughter's iep

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

By advice from the advocy agence we went ahead with the iep meeting. We talked about the fact that they haven’t been teaching my daughter anything. They argued about putting her in any of her regular ed classes. Finally agree to put her back in science with s.e. used as a resource. And to present more challenging work for her to do while in s.e. class. They were shocked by the samples of the work we do at home with her. And still failed to show me a sample of her work from school stating that they send it all home at the end of the year. Not a little at a time. I informed them that I will be requesting another meeting when we find out if we are assigned an advocate. And that I will expect to be shown her work, even if I have to leave it at the school on a weekly basis. This was put in writting. What do I do if they still don’t produce these samples they claim to have.

You have the right to access to your child’s school file.

Request this in writing.

Get your child out of the dumbed down class if she is doing harder work at home. They tried to do the same thing to us. You can refuse sped placement. If you refuse and they want to keep her there they are going to have to take you to court. Just put in writing what you refuse and accept as far as placement goes.

Everything goes in writing.

YIKES! SP ED is NOT supposed to be an instructionalsetting for low functioning students- it is supposed to be an instructional setting for kids that learn differently- sadly the support is sometims not so good!

I agree. That is what I thought we were signing up for. It isn’t what he got.

I have taken the stance with the school that they are to teach him at the highest possible level that is comfortable for him and I will deal with his disabilities. Anything that they have done seems to do more harm than good. I know others have had different experiences. I have learned I could spend all my time fighting them to get them to teach him correctly or do it myself.

It was just easier for me to do it myself. I think others may have different experiences.
