hi, im just wondering if you any of you have your children in occupitional theapry to help with writing skills etc. My son is currently recieving speech theapry at school and outside help with math and reading. He is only in kinder i am wondering if i should also have him tested for occupitional theapry as well to help him writing his words and letters better. He has trouble writing and often uses both hands to color or write. what are your thoughts.

HI,
My son is now in 5th grade and has dysgraphia. When he does color, he has used both hands. He does not enjoy coloring. At first, early intervention included occupational therapy for preschool, but they dropped it when we went to a different district. I am soo sorry I did not have them continue on with fine motor skills development. He would still have dysgraphia(writing disorder) but he would atleast hold a pencil correctly. At his age now, he really is set in his ways.
Follow your gut instinct. The mistakes I have made in the past have been going against my instinct.

yes my son,4th grade, had ot for writing. It improved his fine motor skills but he hasn’t mastered printing. He has learned cursive writing quite well though.
I would request the ot evaluation. If there is a problem, the sooner the remediation starts should improve the outcome.

That is certainly the best age to help that type of problem. My son had OT for handwriting issues in K and 1st grade. They never got him to the point of writing cursive, but at least his printing is legible now.
The problem is that to make the greatest gains, school OT is unlikely to be intensive enough, or continued for long enough. You have to weight he child’s needs in that area against his other needs. Sometimes, depending on the deficits we need to prioritize what to work on. With our son, we felt that we needed to spend our money and outside-school time on other things. So now (in 5th grade) the emphasis has been on teaching him to keyboard rather than beating a dead horse with the writing stuff.
At the kindergarten level though, I’d definitely look into OT for handwriting issues.
