School project

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,
At school today my friends and I were working on our Senior Essay. Our topic was about community service. After, brainstorming for ideas there was one that stood out from the rest.

The idea was to pair up a younger child with a disability and match him up. With an older teen, or even adult with the similar disability. The two pals would write back and forth with each other over the net. If they even wanted to with parents permission, and somehow getting back ground checks. The two pals could meet each other if they live nearby.

I just wanted to know what you think about this idea if it actually worked. If enough people liked it I would try my hardest to get going in my state and elsewhere.

Jonathan Mooney, an LD college grad and author has a project called Eye to Eye which had similar goals. He might be able to give you some guidance. I’ll have to look for his email, but he sometimes posts here and his book is advertized.

Here is info I have from an old email and you could try his email at [email protected]. Good luck!

Project Eye-To-Eye has grown into a non profit based in new york city. As
orginally conceived, this program matches LD/ADHD college students with
LD/ADHD elementary school children as role models, mentors, and tutors. Now
that it is an non profit organization, Our Mission is to partner with
two-year and four-year colleges and universities to bring LD/ADHD college
students into the lives of LD/ADHD elementary-school students as role
models, tutors, and mentors; to support the parents of Eye-to-Eye children
through access to LD/ADHD networks and educational outreach.

The book has gone even better and will be out this fall. It is entitled
Learning Outside the Lines (Simon & Schuster, September 2000)
