school woes

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Well, just got back from a team meeting with my older son’s teachers. Overall he seems to have a solid C except in math. Homework is bringing down his grade immensely. It isn’t missing, he only gets half (or less) right. Today I find out he can correct it on another sheet of paper and get some credit(at least a 70) but oh my gosh, it’s two months worth and we have to get it done in a week. Boo hoo hoo! I am going to talk to his tutor about helping him, sure not gonna let Dad in on this.

Talked with the sp.ed teacher about his WJ scores from 6th grade(he’s in 8th) to clarify his reading grade level ( he scored 5.1 and was in 6th and 3 mos) and to find out what fluid reasoning is because that was a very low score. Well, fluid reasoning just happens to be the skills he needs to do algebra and other math in the future. Abstract thinking and all that fun stuff. Great! No wonder his math is so low. Just had to vent a little. The good news is that he seems to be doing average work with little to no help in his other classes. I am going to make him retake tests with the sp.ed teacher though, he just doesn’t test real well. OK enough rambling, I just had to tell someone.

I should be happy though, my younger son (adhd) has a’s and b’s in 6th grade. Keeping my fingers crossed.
