seventh grader in danger of failing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I would like some advice on what to do about a 7th grader who is really struggling this year and its to the point that he may fail. He has always had learning difficulties and has never formally been diagnonsed as Learning Disabled but it is very clear that he has processing difficulties and dysgraphia. He has an appt. with his doctor soon and from there formal testing shouldn’t be far. His mom will then have to make the appts. for a capd eval (which could take weeks) and have a speech language eval as well and whatever they think he might need. My question is “is there anything she can do besides watch her child fail while she is waiting for these evaluations to be done?” she has tried to help him the best she can and it just isn’t enough. She is at her wits end. I would appreciate any advise you can give and I will pass it on to her. I am just wondering if she has to watch him fail because I think that could really impact him negatively at this level of school. Thanks,

What, specifically, brings his grades down? What kinds of reading, writing and study skills does he have, and what kinds of things give him trouble? How well has he been doing in the past? What are his strengths?

I would only repeat Sue J.’s good questions. School is a process with many steps in the process. We need to where the process is breaking down for him - tests? homework? reading textbooks?
