Sign Language??

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Anyone have any suggestions on where to find sign language class for younger kids, 5-6 yrs old?

My son is taking it at school and doing so incredibly that I don’t want the summer to go by without having classes.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any websites that list sign language tutors or teachers by state??

Thanks
K.

See if you can find a community college class that you can sign up for and bring your child with you. Or, ask a Deaf high school student if they will tutor your child. I would definitely encourage you to pursue this. ASL is not only a beautiful language but it comes from a wonderful culture. For students with learning disabilities, it can be an ideaal way to meet language requirements in school.

It was accepted as a language at the university I went to (San Francisco State University). They had ASL classes there. If they don’t offer classes where you are, perhaps you could get credit by doing course work independently? There are ASL videos available but they are much harder to learn from than the interactive setting of a classroom. One of the ways that I practiced sign was working with a preschool program for Deaf children. Another way I got practice was volunteering for a recreation program for Deaf youth. Both things were a lot of fun, I learned a lot and met some wonderful people.

just wanted to suggested a computer program that i have found very interesting. i am currently taking asl for my college credit. I must say it is a beautiful language. i really love it. I have found it best to learn from someone that is deaf other than a hearing person. My teacher is deaf. He is wonderful. Usually in the summer there are classes taught at maybe a boys and girls club. When these kind of classes are offered you can usually find them in your local paper under community. The cdrom program is a 4cd set for about 20.00 bucks you can find it online at amazon.com. the name is

Instant Immersion:
american sign language by topics entertainment.
it has a girl on front the box should be blue with white or black.

hope that helps.
also you can also find many childrens books on sign online at amazon.com or barnes and nobles.
