social life of child

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is ld and is 12 yrs old. He spends most of his time playing pretend. After awhile this gets old. Also he just crossed over in boy scouts and has been getting upset about going. He is very nervous about tying knots- we have worked extra with him at home, etc. My husband is there for every meeting to help out- Should we allow him to quit? What then will he do for a social life? He does not have one to speak of. worried mom

Here’s my take. I hope others offer thier ideas as well.

You are so describing my 10 year old LD son.

Vivid, vivid imagination! And very little social life. This bothered his father more than me as David SEEMS happy as he is so I figure he IS happy. He just finds happiness differently than most kids.

We tired Scouts, Karate, Y-service groups etc. None of those worked. Our rule is six month. If he still isn’t enjoying himself, he can move on.

We did find that he enjoys the DestiNation ImagiNation Club and being the “store kepper” for his Y daycare group. Thses give him a chance to interact positively with others in creative ways which he enjoys.

I guess what I’m trying to say is maybe your son is happy with his current level of socialization or maybe he just hasn’t found his thing yet.

My 11 yr old son is in a similar social dive. His peers are moving on…he doesn’t fit in with sports although he can do basketball well…not well enough with verbal to work into a team male model. He is Boy Scouts…as the last chance to make any friends. He is in a new school and that has not helped him much. His verbal skills and diaglog are slow to impress or encourage anyone.

Any ideas for social success moving forward. He can be happy alone but I am aafraid of what I am creating for the future.
