Software recommendation and questions...

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Sort of unrelated.

I just wanted to recommend the software game “Zoombinis” - actually its something like the magical journey of the zoombinis. Its a game that doesn’t seem educational at all, but is fabulous ! You try to move your little zoombini men through a journey by solving logic based problems. I think it really builds analytical thinking and logical thinking skills. They have in the classroom at my son’s school, and on the higher levels would challenge many adults.

Also wondering if anyone has any recommendations for other software that is educational in some way but seems like a game.

And finally, are there any reading software programs that you think would just be a good review of skills taught using PG? We have some reader rabbit games, but I’m looking for other ideas. My son needs lots of repetition so anything that reinforces what we are doing but is fun would be great.

I’m not a big fan of “reading software” because it was repeated oral readings with an adult that really helped my son improve, but the Lexia series(Phonics based reading and Lexia Reading S.O.S.) are quite good and one of our tutors used them and my son liked the games on Lexia a lot. The Lexia # is 800-435-3942 Have you used the old Learning Co. Read, Write and Type(in bargain bins now, not the new fancy one)? It’s a phonics based typing program for kids 6-9, that both of my sons used.

Lexia is several cuts above anything else I’ve seen out there, and reinforces the same sound/symbol stuff that PG teaches; Read, WRite & Type is a long-time favorite.

Just looking for something fun he can do that keeps things moving along. Not a replacement for remediation.

Hi Karen,
My son’s all-time favorite are the “Incredible Machine” series. We have two or three of these programs and I have to wrench my son from the computer because he’d create these “machines” all day if I let him! To get a good a good description of each, take a look on Amazon. Perfect for jr. engineer types!

I’ve heard Zoombinis is good (similarly fun and educational) and had been thinking I might get one for my son for Christmas or Hannakah.

I’ve thought about getting the Lexia program too. Just like you I was thinking it might be helpful (and possibly fun!) reinforcement of PG.

Its precisely the early arrival of Hannukah this year that prompted me to start looking for more software. Got to come up with something besides game boy games and yu gi oh cards.

I’m starting my holiday shopping too! In fact I had to stop at Best Buy today and checked for Zoombinis, but they’re not carrying them anymore. I’m thinking Zany Brainy may carry them??? I’ll check next week, otherwise I better order early. Since we celebrate both Hannakah and Christmas I always have twice as much stuff to shop for! :-o
