SOME QUESTIONS.

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello, i am very new to this.My son is 6 and has be identified as having a learning disablity. I have some questions. Hope you can help in someway. How were your children identified? did you the parent noticed anything? I am thinking of having a hearing test done.I find it very akward that my son always must have his tv on loud. He gets upset if i turn it down on him but i explain his twin will wake up.Some history he is premature baby twin. He was delayed in speech and walking. He is currently receiving speech thearpy. He is also being referred to counseling. Was that something your children do counseling? At home i do not have behavior issues with my son. At school he is offen does get in trouble due to peer pressure the teacher agrees and feels it is his way as feeling accepted. please explain some of your experience with me. I have a iep coming up regarding summer school, do your children attend summer school?

thank you
laura

I don’t understand why his hearing has not been tested BEFORE he began speech therapy? My child was very bright but had severe difficulty writing. He would have melt downs every day after school. I finally realized these were caused by his extreme frustration from not being able to write or spell. We have had IQ test SAT and lots of other test that I don’t even know the names of. We are currently under a psychiatrist care and an educational consultant. My son also has ADHD. It sounds as if you need to be under 1 doctors care and they can advise what test are necessary. Hope this helps.Jan

Okay he has been identified as having a learning disability? Does he currently have an IEP? Most eligibility staffing contain a hearing screening. I would suggest you investigate a central auditory evaluation. Sometimes it is not what goes in but more a matter of what happens to it after it does. He could have an auditory discrimination or processing problem. This can cause word retrevial problems, attention span problems, they can appear to not be listening, and speech delays. This eval must be done by an audiologist in a sound proof room,it is more about background noise involvment rather than not being able to hear. These problems as well as having a learning disability can cause problems in all the areas you describe.

If they reccomend counseling and summer school, great! Get it,and get as much help as you can for him in his education. The trick is to get the right help.
If you have an eval, feel free to post the scores here, there are a lot of people well versed in the scores and canhelp you determine what would be the best kind of help.

Don’t fear,he sounds like typical lder to me,all of these things are common or almost normal in the profile of a kid with learning issues. You came to the right place, there are many people her that can help you shift through all of this info.

Hi Laura,

My son is now 9 will shortly be 10 has been in ld class since shortly after kindergarten started.

1. Yes, I knew my son was behind other kids in speech when he was 2 he hardly talked just used 1 work if possible. Noone would listen to me including my peditricians (there are even 3 in the office). Everyone kept saying he would talk. Finally, when he was 3 the peditrician said the kid isn’t talking. He walked at 8 mos. and is extremely coordinated and good at math.

2. I got him a complete evaluation at the organization in charge of special ed. Had a complete hearing test he tested being developmentally delayed speech over 1 year behind.

3. He has been in speech therapy and sped ever since. Due to delayed speech he is having a hard time reading but I have him privately tutored 2x a week since the sped wasn’t teaching him.

My advice would be have a hearing test done by an audiologist right away. Get him speech therapy a.s.a.p. you will find Speech teachers to be his biggest help.

Turning up T.V. sometimes my son just does it I think to tune other things out.

Good luck to you keep coming to this site it has helped me so much. There is good advice and just knowing you are not the only one trying to figure all this out is great.

Socks,

Here I go again IEP tomorrow. Anyway, aside from all the normal goals for speech I know will be in the IEP I want to add that my son’s reading improve at least one grade equivelant.

Reasonable?

Last year I was horrified that in 3rd grade after having being in ld class since K his reading was 1.1. I have had him tutored this year and see a marked improvement. I don’t know how to figure grade level reading.
