My son(7) is diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, Mood Disorder, and Sensory Processing Disorder. He was tested and we just had the IEP meeting today. He was found Eligible for SLD and EH but the SLD was not addressed on his IEP. His deficits were found in Broad Written Language, Long Term Memory Retrieval, and Visual Motor Skills. They kept saying he was on level so he wouldn’t get any accommodations academically though. They never did any Reading or Math tests but they say he’s on level based on his grades. I don’t understand how he qualifies for SLD but not for accomodations. I asked for them to add things to the IEP but they wouldn’t. The IEP had been written by the Behavior Specialist at the new school where he is being placed in a VE class ahead of time. This man had not ever seen any test scores and had not even met my son. I feel the whole IEP was written to place him in their school based on what they have not on what he needs. I kept asking why they weren’t addressing academics and I kept getting the same answer that he was on level so didn’t need any. So the Domains for Accommodation were only checked in Social/ Emotional Behavior and Independent Functioning. I feel confused and stupid with this. I am worried my son is getting placed in the wrong class but I seem to have no choice. They are going to send him with a regular second grade class for PE, Music, Art, and Computer which are the places he has the most trouble because it’s less structured. This is what they do there so it didn’t seem to matter what was right for my son. Any one know what I should do? I am not a very assertive person so I felt very intimidated with 14 other people sitting there. I need to know how to help my son get what he needs. I still think he should have had some kind of academic testing but maybe I’m wrong. Thanks for the help.
What are the specific areas you feel he has trouble with? Does he do well in school and on tests? Is he happy at school? Does he think he does well?
I have found that you need to find your own accomodations and ask for them explicitly in writing. If you feel he needs more testing you need to be very specific about what you want and submit it in writing.
If you are unsure of what tests he needs you might be able to get help from some of the experts on this board if you give them more information about the areas he has difficulty with.
