Speech and Language Insurance codes

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone know what the proper code for speech and language therapy is?

We finally found an SLP who seems to really understand what my son needs and my insurance is saying it won’t pay for it!! Without insurance it is $150 dollars a visit, which we can’t afford. If we pay for all the visits up front, 24 visits, we will get a 25% discount, we still can’t afford that.

I read on a bulletin board that it can be done but can’t seem to find it now.

Thanks
K.

I think it really depends on how your insurance plan is written. Your SLP should be able to help, but if the plan doesn’t cover certain therapies creativity will only get you so far. We had luck with OT, I think b/c my insurance (Aetna) thought it was PT. They covered some speech b/c my son also had some oral surgery and I think they viewed it as part of his recovery. But they just declined a years worth of speech b/c they don’t cover anything relating to developmental issues at all. Only if speech function is lost due to injury.
We are doing IM (interactive metronome) with a SLP, and the only way to get it covered is to code it as brain dysfunction … not sure I’m comfortable with that.

Thanks for your response. The problem we are having is that the plan doesn’t say they don’t cover it. The office manager called and they said over the phone they would’t cover it.

I found an article on stuttering and it had some insurance ideas in it. I am going to try that way and see what they say. It says it cover speciality visits requested by the primary Dr., so I am going to give it a try.

Thanks
