SST = 504

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello everyone! I have a quick question for whoever can answer it. Is a Student Support Team equal to a 504 plan in a Georgia public school? We were told that the “minutes” listing commitee agreed to classroom modifications would act as the 504 plan for my son who is in the 2nd grade. It is signed by all those who attend and we meet on a routine basis to discuss progress and make changes if neccesary, usually every 4 weeks. Please if anyone out there has an answer, it would be very much appreciated. I want to make sure that our rights are protected should the teacher or administration not hold to the requests.Thank you ~ Shellbie

504 is part of ADA/IDEA. It is a regular ed function and sounds like that is what you have going. When my son broke his arm I asked his school if they would like to write a 504 to accomodate his writing needs and they said no, we will make the accomodations - which they did. Sounds like you have a great system if you meet every 4 weeks to evaluate - you wouldn’t get that on an IEP.
