Suggestions for 17 yr old??

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Back in the beginning of the year my 17 yr old sister was tested for LD. She had Woodcock Johnson, Speech and Lang eval. The school said that they proved nothing. Her Woodcock scores were all within normal limits but her speech and language scores were all out of whack, alot of subtest scatter.

She attends a charter school and it was decided at a meeting that they would use a list of accomodations provided by the speech and lang path. The school did this for about 3 weeks and then stopped. I am really embarassed to say that I have let it slip up and she is still having difficulties.

She has had to retake 3 sophomore classes and it not at a loss going into what should be her senior year. The school doesn’t seem all that considered they told her to make the classes up at the local community college or just not graduate with her class and have to take college classes to get a diploma. They won’t accept high school classes only college for missing classes. It will be impossible for her to take 3 classes at the communtiy college this summer.

I found a school online The Laurel Springs School. If she were to “attend” online classes she would only have to take 5 to 6 classes to get her college prep diploma. I think it is a good idea, she really doesn’t like school and is doing very poorly, it will be a struggle to get her to pass the classes she already failed once.

I am at a loss, my Mother is very unsure of what to do. We have discussed it several times and she seems to be on the fence.

I am considerably older than her but not old enough that she doesn’t come to me. She really wants to go to the online school?? We also found out that one of the local Boston colleges offers online degress in early childhood education. My thinking is that the online high school would really prep her for an online school. I am actually taking classes there now to finish my degree and be a early childhood special ed teacher.

Sorry it is so long, I can never seem to write tiny little posts!!

Thanks,
K.

My concern is would online schools be able to issue
an accredited degree?
Would it be equal to a GED?
Or would she be boxed into online ‘degrees’ and would
she be able to take those degrees and have them accepted
if sh choose to attend a regular college
or
would a place of employment accept the online degrees?

You might get in touch with a local homeschooling association.
They will know the laws of your state inside and out and would
probably be able to show you other options.

I spoke to the Director of the school and she said it would be a regular high school diploma. They are also a regular school who also runs an online program.

I will contact the local homeschooling organization, thanks for the suggestions.

My main goal is to get her out of the enviroment she is in and try to show her some success!

Thanks,
K.

I like the idea of online school.
One BIG problem will be the lack of structure. Lders can be incredibly unorganized, she will NEED supervision,I guarantee. If you truely want to make sure she see’s some success don’t set her up for failure. I do not know if I can do it,it is virtually impossible to stay organized independently for most lders,if she meets this description, then an online Hs is gonna be very hard for her.

I am not working right now so I would be able to be with her all the time! She is fairly organized but she does need someone to keep her on task. The school also offers the program with a teacher. The student is assigned a teacher who works with them to keep them organized, on task, and is available to answer their questions.

I am hoping that between myself and the teacher it would be successful.
