Summer work

Any suggestions out there about what to do during summer vaca? My 13 yr old son is add-inattentive, dyslexic, CAPD. I’m going to try to give him a jump=start on American history for next year, and maybe read one or two books himself. I always have great plans, but putting them into action is such a battle!

Hi Laura,

We work three mornings a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

He works on a computer program

and this one is good also, the SOS version

for 20 minutes

and then we work on either a page
of reading comprehension
or read out of the book Holes.
for 10 minutes.

Max time is 30 minutes.

I think the every other day and only 30 minutes
is key to my DS (dyslexic and short term memory problems).

I agree — set a finite, short time. Read with him, trading paragraphs — pick some historical fiction in something he’ll see next year (I assume that’s why the focus on U.S. History). If he can sort of be “an expert” on something it could really help.
Let him choose… I had a group of kids in my LD American History class that informed me they wanted to learn all the PResidents. Miss JOnes is *not* a big fan of rote recitation… but she is a big fan of her students… so each day we spent three minutes “studying,” then went ‘round the room and everybody went as far as they could down the list. We kept a “grand total” score so that improvement was what mattered, not competing. And it only took 6 or 7 minutes.
Well, we reaped the benefits all year as whenever we read something, if a Pres were mentioned they could pronounce the name — and already knew it was a President. And they knew “oh, this happened later than that” because gosh, Lincoln happened after Jefferson.
Kinda changed Miss JOnes’ view on appropriate rote recitation. Having a skeleton of names and terms is powerful.
