Hi
My son was diagnosed with Ld last July. He is currently attending a private parochial school, but after a year of inadequate services regardless of the best intentions we need to switch to a public school with five days a week service. We have an IEP provided by our County, I am trying to decide whether to request another evaluation. In speaking with the principal, there procedure is to review the current IEP and proceed from there. I am not sure this is adequate because his current IEP has to do with services provided by the County to a parochial school (one time a week service) and not what is needed for him five times a week. I was told they would provide him with whatever services he needs. I have read the Boards for some time and understand their are alot of problems with getting the services your child is entitled too. Does anyone know if he is entitled to another evaluation? His diagnosis reported graphomotor concerns, the principal mentioned possible ot/pt services for him. This was never addressed with his previous IEP, I guess my questions are what do I do to insure that all of his needs are addressed. It is very difficult for me to have faith(what I was told at his previous school) that they will do what they say. Thanks in advance for any information. Darlene
You don’t need to evaluate him again. Poor child, he only went through that last year. The testing to determine current functioning levels in the areas to be targeted by the IEP- which should be addressed in your goals- should be enough.
What you do need to do is write a new IEP that reflects his new situation. So- there needs to be a meeting, you need to review his last evaluation (so the school personnel know what the issues are)and the current progress, decide on goals and then determine services.
Not all parents have a hard time with their schools about this by the way. It is quite true that it can be a wrenching and difficult process, and those folks tend to show up here to vent and share strategies. So the view on the board is a little skewed. But many other parents and schools have very positive relationships and work together well for the good of their kids.
