Talking Book Library

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

With a bright 7 yr old dyslexic i wanted to get talking books from local library to help keep up with his interests while we remediate. These are Library of Congress so we had government form to fill out. On form if learning disability then I needed diagnosis from MD or opthalmologist. Neither are qualified to diagnose dyslexia. Local optometrist had just been to vision therapy seminar and so wanted to charge me arm and leg for evaluation. Finally found an MD who after getting fax from LMB tutor saying this boy is dyslexic signed off on form. For free -bless him. Librarians wanted to give me books, regional supervisor said she’d called Wa, DC rep who’d come thru about this but her hands were tied. If gov awareness is so low that they think dyslexia diagnosed by eye doctors and MD’s is there no wonder education system so messed up?
By way when we got books we were amazed at how little beef there was in the burger. No biographies of famous presidents, about 3 useful science books, no classics like : Last of Mohicans, Huck Finn, etc… Presumably the books kids would be getting in school. These were not available in the adult catalogue either. If my kid were blind I’d be REALLY pissed off.

Hmm. Are your talking books from the Recordings for the Blind organization or are they something provided only by your local library. I’ve found Recordings for the Blind to be very willing to lend out their tapes through the mail to my dyslexic son and I find their collection to be extensive.

www.booksontape.com is my favorite though. Their fees are fairly reasonable and they provide a wonderful mailer package that already has the postage on it to make return easy.

As I said what we have is the Library of Congress (as in Washington, DC )talking books for the blind. Thru the public library system. The whole basement is full of these books and we were given the official LOC catalog. They can only be played on a certain tape recorder which we were lent- probably most of reason why the gov form (as in Federal) had to be filled in.

Thanks for the site .but I’m afraid that’s a bit pricey for our needs.

You could try that organization and see if their fees are more reasonable. They also have a decent collection of books on tape.

Good luck.
