Hello, I have a 17 year old son who has dyslexia and has been in ese classes since second grade. He will graduate this may. He was recently tested and we got the results back. I really don’t understand them completely but I do understand the bottom line. This has set his self esteem very low. He wanted to go to school for nascar and auto tech but with these grade he can’t. I told him he needs to get private tutoring and practice but right now he doesn’t want to. He said he has tried for years and gotten help in school and it hasn’t helped him.
He was given the WAIS-III with tthe vocab. scaled score at 7, arithmetic with a 6, inforamtion with a 6, comprehension with a 7, block design with a 12, matrix reasoning with a 14, and so on. Overall he received a verbal IQ score of 82 (12 % tile), performance IQ score of 106 (66% tile), and full scale IQ score of 91 (27% tile).
He was also give the Woodcock-Johnson III test with letter-word ident at raw 33-grade equiv. 2.2, reading fluency 25-grade equiv 2.7, calculation 23, grade equiv 7.3, and math fluency 92-grade equiv 7.9; broad reading grade equiv 2.2, broad math grade equiv 4.8, and broad written language 3.5.
He has tried through the years I have seen his self esteem go up and he do really well and when it was low he didn’t care. Yes the teachers had a part in it as well as other students. He has been mainstream since 6th grade with ese classes for reading and writting.
Can other parents give me some suggestions I’m open to anything.
thank you
Re: teenager with dyslexia
There are two programs that can work.
Phonographix the book is called reading reflex. You could try to teach him yourself or find a tutor who uses this. This program has worked for many when everything else has failed. Another option is to take him down to their clinic in Orlando for an intensive session.
You could also find a lindamood bell clinic in your area and sign him up for some intensive remediation. I would possibly try to get the school to pay for this. At least ask. The school failed him, there is no question in my mind about that.
Good luck and please feel free to ask more questions.
ocmost so glad to see your post here. Now that it is posted here instead of the other board you shoud get some good advise from the folks here. Do you mind our asking what type of therapy or programs have been used so far? Has anyone used PG, LIPS, reading recovery, great leaps or any other reading program? Has he had a speech/language eval? Do you know if he has any processing disorders? Do you know if the local community college has literacy classes he can attend? My oldest son age 14 also has dyslexia, the programs we used to help him are: GREAT LEAPS, reading reflux, partner reading, repeated readings, and he also received speech services. Another program that worked well was EAROBICS. EAROBICS is a computer based program that helped him with auditory attention. Others on this board I am sure will share what worked with them. Glad to have you on the board. Good luck to you and your son.
