Tipson getting son to not rush thru schoolwork.

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son (8) has never been diagnosed ADD, but he has some of the traits. He does well in school and is a great reader. But he is always in such a hurry. His handwriting is terrible (he received special “help” from the schools during preschool/K for fine/gross motor delays) and that only makes it worse. He makes many careless errors on assignments and tests. He first report card this year was almost all A’s but he had many declines on the 2nd card and we think much of that is due to his rushing. He always wants to be THE FIRST ONE FINISHED! We tell him to slow down all the time. Any ideas on getting him to be more careful and take his time!!

Thanks!
Liz

Sounds like me as a kid…:-).. I remember being the first one done in grade school and out the door for recess…It drove the teachers nuts…I didn’t care..I am still pretty fast but it is hard to slow down……Perhaps you can set up some kind of incentive system that he will buy into…

We rush through things that are difficult. My son has difficulty with details but only visual details. He can listen to a very detailed book on tape for hours and hours.

I was recently told he has the eye muscles of a 3 year old by a behavioral optomotrist. I am beginning to wonder if all his attention difficulties are not tied to his eyes and he is not really adhd after all. He really can look very adhd at times.
