You supportive folk helped me through the struggles and finally the decision to move and place our son in a ld private school. Well, four years flew by and our dreams were fulfilled with a happy, well-adjusted (most days) 18 year old who reads better and has been accepted at a four year college with a scholarship even! We have moved out of our apartment in San Diego to our house in the high desert outside of Los Angeles county. Our son has deferred his college plans for one year so that he can work and take a break from academics. I have a new teaching job in RSP in a very small middle school in our very small community. I am excited to know that I can now teach children to read after my wonderful training in San Diego City Schools. My husband continues to hold my hand as we sigh a big sigh of relief that this challenge has been met. College next year will bring new challenges for our dear son, but we feel we have taught by example to push ahead. In the meantime we are all catching our breaths, taking well deserved rests and facing some interesting new adventures. I’ll continue to check in and am always happy to offer support. I know it meant so much to me. Thank you all.
Re: update, new roads ahead
Angela,
I always enjoy your updates—it is reassuring to see how well your son has done with a similar set of disabilities. Your message was posted the same day that I went in to negotiate with my son’s sixth grade teachers about little things like requirements that everything be written in pen in cursive! (My son has history of output problems. He can read cursive but only years of therapy has got him to the point of being fluent printing and cursive takes him about three times as long).
Glad to hear you are back in your house too.
Beth
Re: update, new roads ahead
This is such a wonderful story. I myself batteled with putting my son into a private school to deal with his LD’s. I did choose to put him innto the private school. He’s been there 1 week now and seems to love it. I sure hope and pray my son comes out as well as yours has. You know the sturggles and have apparently been through your fair share. Keep catching your breath for the next year and I’ll be thinking of you all.
Amanda
It’s great to hear from you and to know that things have been working out. (I think a year off to grow in other directions is a agreat idea… tho’ do encourage him to occasionally READ :-) :-))
