Vision Testing for Perception Issues

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

A few years ago the board was hot and heavy on what kind of eye specialist was qualified to adequately test and prescribe exercises and glasses for children with disorders different from the usual nearsighted/farsighted issues. Could someone point me to the websites and give me the straight skinny. I’m in Ohio and this is for my niece, Joy.

The specialist you are asking about is a developmental optometrist (also called a behavioral optometrist, especially in the U.K.). You can find certified developmental optometrists in your geographic area at http://www.covd.org.

Some good websites with information about vision and vision therapy are:
http://www.vision-edge.org
http://www.vision3d.com
http://www.visionhelp.com
http://www.visiontherapy.com
and I’m sure there are others.

If money is an issue, the parents should ask when they call whether the optometrist is willing to design a primarily home-based program of vision therapy, if VT is indicated. Most optometrists will, and this can greatly reduce costs, but some do only in-office vision therapy.

I can’t point you toward a website, but my son received successful testing and remediation for his non-near-far-sighted condition from a developmental optometrist. The testing was extensive; the remediation effective. You may have trouble finding one in your area, because they often do not list themselves as developmental optometrists. If you have trouble, e-mail me. I’ll see who my local optometrists know there.

Hi there Osinski,

It’s been quite a while, just saw your post and wanted to say hello. Can’t offer you any web sites or otherwise, but… couldn’t pass up saying “hey”. I haven’t disappeared from the bb, just been real busy at work, and killing the computer periodically. Hope all is well with you and yours.

I just had my son tested for Perception Issues. I live in Ohio also. I don’t know where you are, but I would highly recommend Dr. Grant in Cuyahoga Falls (suburb of Akron) if you are anywhere near that area. The office is called Grant Vision Center. The evaluation we received was very in-depth and detailed. It was very helpful.

It was my son’s ticket to eligibility.

The Vision Center also offers Vision Therapy if needed. We have not begun this therapy yet, but intend to start very soon.

E-mail me if you would like the phone number or address to this office.

Christine
