want hints for science/ social studies

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Child is in 5th grade and in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th there have been problems with her functioning well in science and social studies. I was told in 2nd grade teacher was not really hands on and did too much lecturing. In 3rd and 4th grade she did not complete or start quite a few written assignments in science and social studies class. She told me know one could help her. ( They usually pair her up with another child to do assignments) When I asked what could happen to solve the problem , I was told she could have extra time. Why she did not get extra time, I don’t know, it is in the IEP for overall accomodations. I am trying to solve the problem before it becomes one this year. I do have on the IEP to have advance knowledge of the vocabulary words, which the speech therapist is suppose to do. ( our speech therapist is out right now and should be coming back part time next week). I also had put in the IEP the right to take home the text if there is one. I don’t seem to catch this too soon as the teachers like to keep portfolios of work done to be seen by the parent at the end of year. Any hints I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks-

In my kids school, if they don’t complete their assignments in class they have to finish them as homework. So we’ve seen alot of my dd’s work. We’ve also strongly encouraged our dd to bring her textbook home. This was a challenge because initially she insisted they were not allowed to bring them home. But the school didn’t have any problem with it.

They also will send home a study guide prior to the test(the whole class gets this). This has helped alot (except when she forgets to bring it home). What we ran into was getting her to remember the facts. The image linking exercises have helped alot. We still get stuck on vocabulary. For example on her science test she had to know the food pyramid. She just could not remember the name ‘producer’ and ‘consumer’. She knew what they meant, but just couldn’t remember the names. We tried to do picture images (ex. someone doing motions for a movie ‘producer’. Well, this was a vocabulary word that she didn’t have any concept of, so it was not a good image for her. We just couldn’t come up with anything. Luckily, she didn’t have to name this on the test - whew).
