wanting typing program would PTA help

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Well I got most of what I wanted on the IEP, what I did not get was typing. As we were discussing as a team, they said my child was getting typing and I said she wasn’t.They then said maybe she was being pulled out of class when it was happening. So I wrote the teacher a note asking why my child was not getting typing instruction, she said first of all the soft ware wasn’t working and most importantly there were no parent volunteers to teach it.I did talk to the principle about the miscommunication between the IEP team and the regular classroom as it seems this seems to be the major problem. But when I asked about 4th grade and would she get it then ,I was told it would depend on parent volunteers. The only thing I got on the IEP about typing is as a modification when there is alot of writing she can type it instead.I did get a goal of writing clearly and I had them add the words penmanship and grammatically to clarify.Does getting involved with the PTA help establish a typing program I have been so busy working to pay for tutors and teaching my child I hadn’t gotten involved with it but am wondering if it would help.

Not exactly sure what you want to ask the pta for. It would probably be a good place to start to get parent volunteers that the school seems to be lacking. You could possibly see if they would consider funding a typing program but it would have to be something available to all students, again parent volunteers to help implementation would be something to lobby for. Just from my limited experience as a pta member/pta president’s wife/koolaid lady :o)

My daughter, age 9, going into 4th grade, had OT throught the school because of her handwriting. Her OT worked with her on typing as well; however, 30 min/wkly just won’t cut it. I have typing games at home and Mavis Beacon which she uses several times a week - she’s up to about 15 wpm.
